Making family bilingualism work in real life

Kieltenopettaja Annika Bourgogne
to 17.10. klo 13.00 – 13.30

HUOM! Tallennettu nettiluento alkaa kohdasta 00:37 minuuttia.

Annika Bourgogne - the lecturer - is a language teacher and the author of "Be Bilingual - Practical Ideas for Multilingual Families". The lecture is organised by Duo (for intercultural families) in cooperation with Väestöliitto.

Children may be like sponges when it comes to language learning, but many intercultural families say that they would still like to have a bag of tricks to combine bilingualism and real-life parenting. Annika Bourgogne shares practical and fun ideas that families can use to make bilingualism work in their busy lives. The ideas are backed up by the latest research in the field, but focus on making growing up with two or more languages an enjoyable experience for the children.
After the lecture (30 minutes) Annika will have time for comments and questions.

  • 13:28 Raquel Rod Hi! Thanks for the lecture! My question, what do you suggest when for example bilingual children get together to encourage the minority language use, but they end up playing in the main language?
  • 13:30 Raquel Rod Thanks!
  • 13:31 Diad-Kahden kulttuurin perheet What is the most common question you get from bilingual families?
  • 13:31 Diad-Kahden kulttuurin perheet What seems to puzzle them?
  • 13:31 paula3 Hi! I'm Paula, I'm English and live in Denmark with my Danish partner and we have a 7 month old son. My question relates to when to learn to read and write in English - at the same time as Danish or before school starts at 7?
  • 13:34 Eva I cant hear the lecture, but I wonder what to do, when we live in Finland and the father of child is Norwegian, but working on sea and away for 4 weeks. How to support the minority language? I dont speak norwegian, we speak english together. My mother and sister speaks swedish, but is it too much, if they would speak swedish to my son? He is only 3,5 months yet, but isnt it good to think these things in advance? :) and will our son be very confused, when i speak finnish, my boyfriend norwegian and we speak english..
  • 13:35 Diad-Kahden kulttuurin perheet Eva: I will pass your questions to Annika and she will reply to it. Then, when the recorded lecture comes available online, you can go and listen to her answer. Hope that is OK for you as well! Thank you for the question!
  • 13:35 paula3 That's really interesting - thank you!
  • 13:35 Eva Diad, thanks :)
  • 13:39 Diad-Kahden kulttuurin perheet What do you think is the most important thing an intercultural and bilingual couple expecting a child can do to prepare themselves for family bilingualism? What do you think they should discuss, decide, consider...?
  • 13:41 Diad-Kahden kulttuurin perheet There's still time for 1-2 comments and questions :)
  • 13:42 Raquel Rod We registered our two children in maistratti with the minority language as mother language with the idea of those to be considered in the statistics. Do you know if those are considered in practice when cities are planning support activities for bilingual children? In my case is Espoo.
  • 13:43 Diad-Kahden kulttuurin perheet We are coming to the end of today's online lecture. Thank you all for coming and thank you for sharing your experiences, comments and questions!
